Ashley Stark : An Interview & Peek Into Her Glam Manhattan Home

If you love design, the name Stark may ring a bell.... as in Stark Carpet--the design darling of gorgeous custom rugs.

As social media tends to do, I connected with Ashley Stark, Creative Director of Stark Carpet via Instagram after seeing her very glam dining room featured in a past issue of Elle Decor

Here's my Q&A with Ashley on her job, love of interior design and her top picks for all things New York, not to mention a few shots of her gorgeous home!

Thanks Ashley for taking the time to answer my questions.

1) Tell us about Stark as well as your position as Creative Director.  What is a typical day for you and what do you like best about your job

As Stark’s creative director, I oversee the stylistic aspects of everything we do, from color direction to the designs we carry.  What I love most about  my job is that no day is the same.  My position allows be to be involved in all aspects of the company, and I get to work with talented designers all day.  I love developing designs and seeing those become actual rugs and carpet.  Traveling to the mills all over the world is one of my favorite things.  It’s such a unique experience to see how different rugs are made.  It brings you back in time seeing the art of the handwoven rug.

2) I found a gorgeous image of your dining room featured in Elle Decor via Instagram--did you use a designer for your home? If so, whom? How would you describe your design aesthetic ?  How do you go about decorating your home? What is your favorite room in your home?

I worked with Jim Aman and John Meeks of Match Studios to help me pull it all together.  It was a collaboration – I had the vision and the foundation for what I wanted, and they helped bring it to life.   My aesthetic is what I call ‘timeless traditional’ with a touch of livable modern, if that makes sense.  I like textures over pattern, and want each room to be approachable and comfortable.  I am torn on my favorite room!  I love my bedroom so much, it’s so soothing and lush, but my den with the wood on the ceiling is a subtle show stopper.  And then of course my daughter’s room is so beautiful.

3) Lifestyle--You are based in NYC. How long have you lived in NYC? What are some of your favorite spots to shop for furniture & accessories/eat out/ etc?

I have lived in NYC my whole life, with the exception of my college years at Brown University.  I am a city girl all the way.  I have been going to the Manhattan vintage clothing and textile show since I was 8 years old.  I still look forward to going in the fall and spring.  I love to shop at Home Nature, Flair and the D&D building.  I love going to the home furnishings market in High Point, North Carolina, and the NY Now show and seeing all the vendors.  Some of my favorite restaurants are Apizz on the lower east side, Morandi in the west village, Sushi of Gari, Il Buco, L'artsui … there are just too many to name.  NYC has so much to offer. I love discovering new small shops and going to galleries all over the city.
